The Books Of Allah
There are four revealed books that came from Allah through the angel Jibra'il to the prophets. They are the Taurat, Zaboor, Injeel, and the Qur'an.
The Taurat
The Taurat was revealed to the Prophet Musa(pbuh) as a guidance to the Children of Israelasis stated in Surah Anbiyaa, verse 48 :
In the past We granted to Moses and Aaron the criterion (for judgement) and a Light and a Message for those who would do right.
The original Taurat is no longer available at this point and Jewish scholars have written down their interpretation of the meaning of this revelation.
The Zaboor (Psalms)
The Zaboor or Psalms was revealed to the Prophet Dawud(pbuh) as a continuation of guidance to the Children of Israel as is stated in Surah Israa, verse 55:
And it is your Lord that knoweth best all beings that are in the heaven and on earth: We did bestow on some Prophets more (and other) gifts than on others: and We gave to David (the gift of) the Psalms.
The original of the Psalms is also not presently available.
The Injeel (Bible)
The Injeel was the last book revealed to the Children of Israel as a guidance and purification of what was revealed before. It was sent down to the Prophet Isa(pbuh) as is said in surah Ma'idah, verse 46:
And in the footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary confirming the law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light and confirmation of the law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.
This book is also not available in its original form and the present day Bible is merely a collection of the writings of Christian religious scholars combined with a few Greek scrolls.
The Qur'an
The Qur'an is the last of the revealed books and it is the seal of Allah's direct communication with mankind. It is also known as Al-Furqan and Al-Dhikr. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh). It contains thirty sections, 114 chapters and according to Ibn Abbas, 6616 verses, 77,934 words and 333,671 letters. Allah has promised mankind to protect this book until the Day of Judgement in surah Hijr,
verse 9:
We have without doubt sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).
There is also evidence in the Qur'an that scrolls were revealed to the Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh), but because there is no detail about them, they are not considered to be one of the revealed books. See Surah Al-Alaa, verse 19:
The books of Abraham and Moses.
It is part of the faith of a Muslim to believe in the revealing of all of these books. But it is compulsary only to follow the Qur'an, because it is the only book in its original form and it is the finalilty of Allah's message.
